Doing the same thing over & over again
Sawtooth ARI, Launceston
1 - 23 September 2017
Doing the same thing over & over again focuses on the formal conversations that can be created from the pairing of painting and sculpture. Derived from architectural forms, these meditative works are an investigation into colour, space, shape and void. Sculptures of urban landmarks such as billboards and discount chemists work in conjunction with paintings constructed from similar forms, creating the impression of a city-scape seen from the corner of an eye. Bold colours and fine shadows often conceal more than they reveal, leaving behind an imprint of solid architectural forms that vanish on closer inspection.
This exhibition continues my investigation into harnessing the emotive power of everyday scenes which have been transformed into quiet images, inducing contemplative stillness. Sitting on the boundary between minimal abstraction and the figurative, I reduce my images to an essence, leaving behind tensions between architectural space and the numinous items of my surrounds.
